AI Rally Lifts SoftBank and Chip Stocks Across Asia

Reading Time : 2 minutes

The sudden surge in SoftBank’s stock has raised fresh questions about how deeply artificial intelligence hype is now shaping Asian financial markets. Following the release of OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 model family, investors moved quickly, pushing SoftBank shares up more than 11 percent in a single session. The scale and speed of the reaction suggest that markets may be pricing in expectations that go well beyond immediate fundamentals.

Behind the optimism lies SoftBank’s increasingly visible alignment with OpenAI. The conglomerate has been working to secure a multibillion dollar financing deal tied to its stake in the AI firm, while also rolling out enterprise cybersecurity products built on the same technology. This positioning has transformed SoftBank from a volatile investment holding company into what many now view as a proxy for AI expansion in Asia.

The ripple effects did not stop with SoftBank. Semiconductor companies across the region moved in tandem, reflecting the critical role of memory and processing power in sustaining the AI boom. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics extended earlier gains, while Kioxia continued its remarkable rise after months of aggressive expansion tied to data center demand. The momentum points to a supply chain that is being rapidly repriced as AI adoption accelerates.

Yet beneath the rally, there are signs that caution may be warranted. The Nikkei’s sharp climb, briefly approaching record territory, appears closely tied to sentiment around a single technological release. While GPT-5.6 promises improved efficiency and stronger capabilities, the long term revenue impact remains uncertain. The current surge may reveal as much about speculative positioning as it does about genuine structural change in the AI economy.
