Xiaomi has quietly transformed itself from a smartphone upstart into a serious silicon player, and its latest move makes that ambition impossible to ignore. The company has pulled back the curtain on three new processors in its Xuanjie family, better known as XRing, covering smartphones, edge artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving. The chips were first revealed in China on August 24 and then carried onto the global stage at IFA 2026 in Berlin this week, marking Xiaomi’s debut appearance at the trade show. For a company long criticized for depending on outside chipmakers, the breadth of this lineup signals a deliberate pivot toward building foundational technology in house.

At the center of the announcement sits the XRing O3, a flagship mobile chip built on a 3-nanometer process and packing 24 billion transistors into a 133-square-millimeter die. It pairs a 10-core CPU reaching 4.35GHz with a 16-core GPU and an NPU capable of 200 TOPS of tensor performance, while introducing LPDDR6 memory support with claimed bandwidth of 113.8GB per second. Early benchmarks suggest the O3 outperforms Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon flagship while drawing less power, and it will debut in the Xiaomi 18 Fold, a wide-aspect foldable phone scheduled for its official China launch on September 7.

The other two chips pursue different bottlenecks. The XRing O100, built on a 6-nanometer process, tackles the memory wall that constrains on-device AI by bonding two layers of high-speed DRAM to an NPU layer through 3D wafer-level stacking, achieving 1.22TB per second of bandwidth across 14 NPUs and running inference at 330 tokens per second. The XRing D100, meanwhile, is aimed squarely at autonomous vehicles, combining a 20-core CPU with a 16-core NPU and supporting up to 160GB of unified memory, enough to run AI models with up to 200 billion parameters. Both have completed development and are expected to reach commercial deployment in 2027.

The strategy behind this silicon push is becoming clear. Xiaomi’s president has described the chip program as part of an effort to build foundational technologies powering the company’s connected ecosystem of phones, electric vehicles, and smart home appliances, while insisting the company will keep working with Qualcomm and MediaTek because, as he put it, every business is chip-dependent. Production is being handled in partnership with the world’s leading foundry, and analysts estimate planned investment of at least 50 billion yuan, on top of more than 21 billion yuan already disclosed in cumulative research spending. The question now is whether Xiaomi can execute at scale and turn these ambitious designs into volume products that actually ship.
