Bitcoin Reclaims $81K as Rare Bear Market Signals Flash

Reading Time : 3 minutes

Bitcoin climbed back above $81,000 over the weekend, extending a sharp rally that began after a short squeeze wiped out roughly $230 million in bearish positions. The move pushed the cryptocurrency above its 50-week moving average for the first time on a sustained basis in months, a level that many traders watch as a rough dividing line between bull and bear regimes. Whether Bitcoin can hold that ground through the weekly close is now the focal point for analysts arguing that the narrative may be shifting from capitulation to recovery.

The technical picture has drawn attention because several rarely triggered signals are flashing at once. A prominent analyst highlighted that a weekly close above the 50-week moving average would significantly weaken the case for an ongoing bear market, while another pointed to a monthly bullish crossover on the Fisher Transform indicator that has only appeared three times before since 2011, each time near a major bottom. On-chain data adds another layer, with a key profitability metric for spent outputs moving back above a threshold that has historically aligned with bull market conditions.

This rebound unfolds against a punishing backdrop for Bitcoin miners, who have endured months of prices below estimated production costs. Industry analysts have placed the average cost to mine one Bitcoin near $78,000, and the cryptocurrency traded under that level for five straight months through June, forcing publicly listed mining companies to sell a record amount of Bitcoin in the first quarter to fund operations. The contrast between strained fundamentals in the mining sector and emerging technical strength in price action is part of what makes the current setup feel so contested.

Despite the optimistic technical signals, retail sentiment remains cautious, with chatter on social trading platforms still leaning bearish and participation levels relatively low. Some market observers view that disconnect as a potential contrarian sign, suggesting that a broader shift in confidence may lag behind the price and on-chain data. For now, the question is whether this weekly close and the cluster of rare signals can sustain momentum long enough to turn a technical rebound into a more durable change in trend.
