Cambodia has inaugurated its new Techo International Airport, a $2 billion project located about 30 kilometers south of Phnom Penh. Replacing the city’s old international airport, it officially began operations on September 9, 2025. Designed by Foster + Partners and built with Chinese cooperation, the new hub represents a major leap in the country’s infrastructure ambitions.

The airport’s first phase can handle up to thirteen million passengers yearly, with expansions planned to reach thirty million by 2030 and fifty million by 2050. Its sleek architecture and advanced facilities aim to turn Phnom Penh into a competitive regional gateway, capable of accommodating long-haul routes and improving Cambodia’s appeal to both tourists and investors.

For travelers, the Techo International Airport means improved amenities, modern terminals, and smoother travel experiences. Its location, though farther from the city center, is expected to become more convenient as new roads and public transit connections are completed. Early visitors report efficiency and a distinctly contemporary atmosphere uncommon in the region’s smaller airports.

Beyond tourism, the project is a symbol of Cambodia’s economic aspirations. The new airport anchors the country’s vision to modernize transport, attract foreign investment, and integrate more deeply into regional trade networks. It is not only a gateway for travelers—it marks a step toward Cambodia’s emergence as a growing hub in Southeast Asia.
