As soon as a contract is signed, the bills accumulate. For example, all models must pay the limousine drivers who transport them from one place to another. Then she has to pay part of the flat rent where they are often lodged with other girls. A model told the AFP press agency (Agence France Presse) anonymously that she had debts of more than 3,000 euros after her first week of work. Without a fixed salary, it is very difficult to repay such an amount.
More expenses than cash
And that’s not all. For a fashion show in New York, for example, a mannequin needs a work permit that is relatively expensive. This amount is obviously to be paid for by him. Moreover, such an event yields almost nothing. In Paris, a parade is paid 1,100 euros and the model receives only 4.00 euros because the rest of the amount is used to pay off debts. Only 2% of supermodels can really count on a high salary. And for male models, this percentage is even lower.
The ‘model law’, an initiative of 26-year-old ex-model Ekaterina Ozhiganova, wants to put an end to such practices. This stipulates that all contracts must be written in English so that each model knows exactly what to expect. In addition, this supermodel rights group has also made other general demands with the hope of making model work more attractive and, above all, more viable.
