Micron Technology has offered Taiwan-based direct labor employees rewards worth between 35 and 68 months of pay, a record package announced after a labor dispute threatened to escalate into a strike. The minimum cash compensation is NT$1.7 million, while eligible employees who joined before August 29, 2025, are also due a one-time NT$1 million bonus. Yet the size of the offer has not settled the dispute.

The timing is significant. Micron is benefiting from exceptional demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence systems, and Taiwan is central to its manufacturing network. For workers, however, the issue is not simply whether this year’s payout is generous. They argue that the company’s existing Incentive Pay Plan fails to reflect the profits generated by their work, particularly when rival memory producers in South Korea have introduced more explicit profit-sharing arrangements.

Union demands go beyond the current reward package. Workers are seeking an additional payment equivalent to roughly 83 months of salary for fiscal 2026, along with a redesigned system from fiscal 2027 that would allocate 15% of operating profit to quarterly bonuses. More than 80% of participating members reportedly supported strike action in an internal survey, while unions representing nearly 10,000 of Micron’s approximately 15,000 Taiwan employees continue to press their case.

The central question is whether Micron’s record payout is a settlement offer or a defensive move designed to prevent disruption without changing the underlying compensation model. Mediation failed to produce an agreement on September 4, and a second round is scheduled for September 21. No strike has begun, but if negotiations collapse and workers approve formal action, the consequences could reach beyond Micron’s factories, adding pressure to an already tight memory-chip supply chain at a moment when AI-related demand is reshaping the industry.
