Xiaomi’s Factory : 60 Phones a Minute, No Human Needed

Reading Time : 2 minutes

Xiaomi’s groundbreaking “dark factory” in Beijing represents a significant leap in automated manufacturing, capable of producing 60 smartphones per minute without human intervention. This fully automated facility operates 24/7, leveraging advanced robotics and AI to achieve unprecedented efficiency in smartphone production. Operating without human intervention, the facility employs advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning technologies to manage the entire production process autonomously. This setup eliminates the need for lighting, heating, or other environmental controls typically required for human workers, allowing for continuous operation. The factory’s automation extends to component assembly, quality control, and even the ability to create a dust-free environment through micron-level dust removal technology.

The factory incorporates cutting-edge technologies to ensure precision and quality in smartphone production. A patented Sky Rail system efficiently transports components throughout the facility, while an automated logic board testing system rigorously checks each unit. Intelligent machines of Xiaomi’s own design control production quality, enabling the creation of one smartphone every second. The facility’s advanced capabilities have earned it certification as a “national intelligent manufacturing enterprise” with an annual production capacity of 10 million flagship smartphones.

Operating 24/7 without human intervention, the dark factory offers significant cost savings through reduced labor expenses and elimination of lighting, heating, and cooling costs. The facility’s energy efficiency is further enhanced by its ability to function without environmental controls typically needed for human workers. Additionally, the automated production line’s high precision and consistency lead to improved product quality and reduced waste, contributing to both economic and environmental benefits. These advantages position Xiaomi’s smart factory as a model for sustainable and efficient manufacturing in the smartphone industry.

The fully automated facility can theoretically produce one smartphone every second, potentially reaching an astounding output of 31.5 million units per year if operated continuously. However, the certified production capacity is 10 million flagship smartphones annually, including upcoming foldable models like the Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 and MIX Flip. This state-of-the-art facility, covering 81,000 square meters and representing a 2.4 billion yuan (approximately $330 million) investment, exemplifies Xiaomi’s commitment to advanced manufacturing technologies and positions the company at the forefront of intelligent production in the smartphone industry.
