How many times have you received an invitation for any kind of event and then you realize you have no idea of what to wear because you’re clueless about the dress code? This has always been a hard topic to handle, especially when it’s a major event and you want to not only look hot but to look appropriate like you were planning to attend for weeks.
Of course, there are those who don’t really care about this, they would just throw something on and that’s it. Black tie
Let’s start from the top, given that this is the most elegant event you can get an invite to. For guys is pretty easy: this means a tuxedo (with the bow tie and everything, the actual black tie, the thin one, does not make the cut). For the ladies is a little bit trickier: but the safest option will be a long dress. The best way to figure this one out is to think about the kind of event you’re attending: if it’s an award ceremony, then you can put on a really dramatic gown. If it is something work related, a formal little black dress can do the trick.
Black tie optional
Here it starts to get a little bit more complicated, but it really depends on how you look at it. From one side, it can be complicated because it gives you a wide variety of options and on the other hand, that can actually make it easier. For the guys, this is where the black thin tie can make an appearance if you want. The suit has to be dark if you’re going for this option. Again, depending on the level of the event, you can wear a tux. For girls it’s the same way, it can either a formal dress or a cocktail one. If you want my advice… go for something with cocktail length but that looks really classy, like a dress with an A-shaped skirt and midi length.
Creative black tie
Did you know there were so many steps before cocktail? Yes, there are, and this one is one of the most popular these days. It means you can actually have fun with your outfit because you have the option to choose: it can be a beautiful gown for women, but with a twist, and also for the guys. Do you want the blue bow tie or the one with polka dots? Go for it. This dress code can be also used for theme parties. Again, it’s a matter of having more fun than usual when you’re getting dressed.
Cocktail
And we have finally arrived the most ‘common’ of the dress codes. And I only say common because it is what you get more in an invitation, not because is easy. If you’re a man, think dark suit with a tie (and you can go without one if the occasion calls for it). Women have to think about party dresses that are short, but not too short. One good rule is to keep the length of the skirt right above the knee. In this case, you can also wear two pieces and, if it’s not that serious, even a cute pair of palazzo or silk pants. One invincible tip: accessorize! You wouldn’t believe the power of a beautiful necklace or a stunning cocktail ring.
Business
Here we have two different categories. One is business formal, which calls for semi-formal events that most likely take course during the day, rarely at night. Think work lunches, conferences, important meetings). Women can wear a pantsuit or even pair a cure tube skirt with a shirt and a nice jacket. Guys, suit, and a tie are almost mandatory, but this time, it can be a lighter color, like gray. The other option that you might find in an invitation is ‘business casual’ which means that girls can go with pants and a blazer, or also the skirt and blazer option. Depending on the tone of your office, you can pair your dark jeans with a blouse and a blazer, same thing for guys, who don’t necessarily have to wear a suit, so the option of matching pants and jacket is available. In both occasions, let’s leave the sneakers out of question. Please.
Casual
Let’s face it, this is the one we like the most. Why? Because it doesn’t mean we have to dress up and wear uncomfortable shoes or anything like that. In this dress code, you can go anywhere between jeans and sneakers to pants and cute flats. Heels are optional but if you’re going for this option, make sure they’re not too elegant.
