Manus AI Exits China, Moves HQ to Singapore Amid Tensions

Reading Time : 2 minutes

Manus AI, a prominent AI startup, has officially shut down its operations in China, closing its offices in Wuhan and Beijing and laying off nearly 120 employees. The decision aligns with escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States and China, particularly around advanced technology and AI development. By moving its global headquarters to Singapore, Manus positions itself in a neutral territory, away from potential risks linked to US export restrictions on AI hardware, especially Nvidia GPUs.

The strategic relocation occurred between May and July 2025, marking a significant pivot for the company behind Manus AI. Access to advanced chips like those produced by Nvidia has become critical for any serious AI enterprise, and Singapore offers fewer restrictions and better connectivity to international markets. This transition is not only about risk management but also reflects Manus’s desire to integrate into a broader, less constrained global tech ecosystem.

Alongside the headquarters move, Manus is expanding its footprint by establishing new teams in San Mateo, California, and Tokyo, Japan. The company is actively recruiting talent across these locations and Singapore, signalling a strong push for global expansion. In contrast, Manus’s digital presence in China has been systematically erased, with social media content removed and its website now blocking visitors from the mainland, underlining a complete strategic retreat.

This shift mirrors a broader trend among tech firms navigating the complex landscape shaped by global politics, technology access, and market strategies. Manus AI’s repositioning is a clear statement of intent to remain a significant player in the AI race, but from a base that offers stability, access to resources, and proximity to other leading markets. Whether this gamble pays off will depend on its ability to thrive in these new environments while leaving its Chinese roots behind.
