Reading Time : 2 minutes

Retail media networks experienced remarkable expansion in 2024, driven by increased investments in digital advertising. Amazon continued to dominate with $56.2 billion in ad revenue, securing its place as the third-largest ad platform in the US after Google and Meta. Walmart also showed strong growth, reaching $4.4 billion in ad revenue, a 27% year-over-year increase, while Target’s Roundel generated $649 million.

Kroger didn’t disclose ad-specific figures but revealed that its alternative profit businesses, including media, brought in $1.35 billion, with retail media growing 17% year-over-year. Criteo, an ad-tech firm partnering with retailers like Macy’s and Best Buy, reported $1.9 billion in revenue, solidifying its role as a major player in the space. These numbers highlight the rapid expansion of retail-driven advertising.

Despite these financial gains, the industry faces potential challenges. Economic uncertainties, including a possible global trade war, could influence consumer spending and impact advertising revenue. While retailers continue investing in their media networks, they are also bracing for market fluctuations that could affect long-term growth. The balance between seizing advertising opportunities and mitigating risks remains a crucial focus for the industry.

Retail media is becoming an increasingly vital part of business strategies, with companies leveraging first-party data to enhance targeting and drive sales. As the industry evolves, competition among major players is intensifying, pushing companies to innovate and refine their advertising approaches. With continued growth and shifting economic conditions, the future of retail media remains both promising and uncertain.
