Musk Loses Nearly $700 Billion as SpaceX and Tesla Shares Tumble

Reading Time : 2 minutes

Elon Musk’s fleeting reign as the world’s first trillionaire has ended in one of the steepest wealth collapses ever recorded. In just over a month, his net worth plummeted by nearly $700 billion, tumbling from a record $1.33 trillion peak to roughly $684 billion. The unprecedented drop erased more than half of his fortune, fueled by sharp declines in both SpaceX and Tesla stock prices that sent shockwaves through global markets.

SpaceX, which powered Musk’s ascent to trillionaire status with a blockbuster June IPO, has seen its shares fall roughly 50% from their highs. Investor confidence wavered amid delayed Starship launches, a massive all-stock acquisition of AI coding firm Cursor that diluted shareholder value, and concerns over an overextended valuation. Tesla compounded the losses, sliding about 37% from its 2026 peak after second-quarter operating profits landed at just $400 million, far below the $1.72 billion analysts had expected.

The broader billionaire class felt the tremors, with the top ten richest individuals collectively losing $368 billion in July alone. Musk accounted for the overwhelming majority of that total, yet he still sits comfortably atop the wealth rankings. His remaining fortune exceeds the combined net worth of Google co-founder Larry Page and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, even after the staggering wipeout that returned his wealth to pre-IPO levels.

Adding to the uncertainty, rumors have surfaced that Musk is exploring a merger between SpaceX and Tesla, potentially creating one of the largest conglomerates in the United States. Reports suggest he may consider selling or spinning off Tesla’s Chinese operations to facilitate the deal, a move that could further complicate investor sentiment. With SpaceX earnings on the horizon, markets are bracing for what comes next in this unfolding saga of ambition, volatility, and high-stakes corporate maneuvering.
