Alibaba’s Instant Commerce Hits 40M Daily Orders Fast

Reading Time : 2 minutes

Alibaba’s newly launched Taobao Instant Commerce portal has quickly become a major player in China’s booming instant retail market, surpassing 40 million daily orders within just its first month. This innovative service integrates merchants from Alibaba’s food delivery platform Ele.me directly into the Taobao app, enabling customers to receive a wide range of products—from groceries to electronics—within 60 minutes. The rapid adoption underscores the growing consumer demand for immediate delivery in China’s e-commerce landscape.

The backbone of this service is Ele.me’s extensive logistics network, which includes millions of registered delivery riders and advanced AI dispatch systems that optimize delivery routes. This integration allows Alibaba to leverage Ele.me’s strengths in fast delivery and combine them with Taobao’s massive user base and merchant ecosystem. The unified platform not only streamlines order management for merchants but also enhances customer experience with faster and more reliable deliveries.

Alibaba’s move intensifies competition with other Chinese giants like JD.com and Meituan, who have also heavily invested in instant delivery services. Meituan dominates food delivery and has expanded into instant retail, while JD.com offers rapid delivery through its MiaoSong service. Together, these three companies now form a “triopoly” in China’s instant commerce market, which is projected to grow to over 2 trillion yuan by 2030, far outpacing traditional online retail growth.

This rapid delivery innovation is reshaping consumer expectations and the retail landscape in China. Alibaba’s strategy of combining instant delivery with flash sales, discounts, and a broad product assortment is setting a new standard for e-commerce convenience. As the instant retail market heats up, Alibaba’s success with Taobao Instant Commerce signals a future where speed and seamless integration define online shopping.
