A Legacy of Service. Queen Margrethe, at 83, stands as the world’s only reigning queen and the longest-serving current monarch in Europe. Her journey began in 1972, succeeding her father, King Frederik IX. Unlike British tradition, no formal crowning ceremony is planned for Crown Prince Frederik, aged 55. His accession will be formally declared on the day, as he steps into the roles of King of Denmark and head of state, overseeing the constitutional monarchy in Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. The transition also brings Princess Mary, Crown Prince Frederik’s Australian-born wife, into the role of Denmark’s Queen Consort.

Reflecting on Change. Queen Margrethe’s decision to abdicate followed a period of introspection prompted by a back surgery in early 2023. Expressing gratitude for the support of the Danish public over the years, she recognized that the time had come to entrust the responsibilities to the next generation. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged the queen’s dedication, reflecting on the challenges of comprehending a change in throne after a millennium of handed-down duty.
