In the third quarter, the company raised $12.4 billion by selling new shares and another $28.7 billion through senior unsecured notes, while repurchasing no stock at all. For a company that spent $11.5 billion on buybacks in the same quarter a year earlier, the reversal is more than a technical accounting shift. It signals that Alphabet now needs outside capital to support an artificial intelligence infrastructure program whose costs are rising faster than the cash generated by its core businesses.

The arithmetic behind the fundraising is unusually direct. Alphabet generated $42.3 billion in operating cash flow during the quarter, yet spent $51.4 billion on property and equipment, much of it for data centers, servers, networking capacity, and other technical infrastructure tied to AI. That left free cash flow at negative $9.1 billion, the second consecutive quarter in which the company spent more than it collected after capital investment. Capital expenditures more than doubled from $24.0 billion in the year-ago quarter, while operating cash flow declined from $48.4 billion.

The equity sales were conducted through an at-the-market program, which allows a company to issue shares gradually at prevailing market prices rather than through a single large offering. Alphabet sold 12 million Class A shares for net proceeds of $4.3 billion and 24 million Class C shares for $8.1 billion, leaving $27.6 billion available under the program at quarter end. The $28.7 billion note issuance was described only as being for general corporate purposes, but its timing leaves little doubt about the immediate need: Alphabet is financing a buildout that management expects to intensify, with capital spending already guided to $195 billion to $205 billion for 2026 and a significant further increase signaled for 2027.

The market response suggests investors are asking whether the returns will arrive quickly enough to justify the outlays. Alphabet reported 25% revenue growth to $127.6 billion, and Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to $30.7 billion, evidence that AI demand is producing real commercial momentum. But net income fell to $26.5 billion from $35.0 billion a year earlier, and the shares dropped roughly 10% in after-hours trading after the results. The tension is now clear: Alphabet is betting that enormous spending today will secure the computing capacity, cloud customers, and AI products of tomorrow, while shareholders must decide how long they are willing to fund that bet before the cash returns.

Bénédicte Lin – Brussels, Paris, London, Beijing, Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo, New York, Taipei, Hong Kong

#Alphabet #Google #AI #CloudComputing #CapitalExpenditures #FreeCashFlow #StockMarket #TechEarnings #ArtificialIntelligence #CorporateFinance

Reading Time : 3 minutesAlphabet raised $12.4 billion from share sales and $28.7 billion from notes in the third quarter while buying back no stock.
