Microsoft researchers have introduced a machine learning method designed to correct recurring errors in forecast models, while meteorologists examining a recent hurricane found that an AI system could outperform conventional models on a storm’s path yet still misjudge its intensity. Together, the cases raise an important question: how much should the public trust automated forecasts when lives and property are at stake?

The new Microsoft method, called Probabilistic Bias Correction, does not attempt to build a better weather model from scratch. Instead, it studies the systematic mistakes a model has made in the past and adjusts future probability forecasts accordingly. In tests involving a major European forecasting system, the technique improved predictions of precipitation, temperature and pressure across most targets. It also reportedly doubled the accuracy of an AI forecasting system at the difficult two-to-six-week range, a period where small errors can compound into major misses. The researchers say the approach improved forecasts of extreme weather, including floods, where earlier correction methods sometimes made matters worse.

The hurricane case tells a more complicated story. When the storm approached the Gulf Coast, the AI model examined by meteorologists produced an exceptionally accurate track forecast in the final 72 hours, missing the landfall point by only about 19 miles. Traditional global models were farther off, and a European AI model missed by roughly twice that distance. Yet the same system weakened the hurricane too quickly near shore, portraying it as a weaker storm shortly before it came ashore. Forecasters also noted that specialized hurricane models better captured an unusual band of intense winds on the storm’s western side, a detail that mattered for people in its path.

The lesson is not that AI forecasting has failed. It is that success depends on what is being measured. A model can be remarkably good at locating a storm while still struggling with its strength, structure or rapid changes near land. Former hurricane forecasters caution that official forecasts and the strongest consensus models still outperform AI at many points in a forecast cycle. The most responsible approach may be to treat AI as a powerful new instrument in the forecaster’s toolkit, one that must be tested, corrected and interpreted by people who understand both its strengths and its blind spots.

Bénédicte Lin – Brussels, Paris, London, Beijing, Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo, New York, Taipei, Hong Kong

#AI #WeatherForecasting #MachineLearning #Hurricanes #Meteorology #Microsoft #DeepMind #ClimateTech #Forecasting #ExtremeWeather

Reading Time : 3 minutesAI weather forecasting is advancing quickly, but recent results show both promise and limits.
