At a recent conference in Singapore, the chief executives of Intel and Broadcom suggested that the real constraint may be financial. Their warning lands at a moment when data centers, advanced processors, memory, power infrastructure and specialized engineering talent are all being stretched by a wave of investment that shows little sign of slowing.

Broadcom’s chief executive argued that capital could become the hardest bottleneck of all, even more difficult than shortages of semiconductors, memory or electricity. Intel’s leader echoed that concern, pointing to the cost of borrowing and the long wait before expensive infrastructure produces a return. Building AI capacity is not like launching an app. It requires enormous upfront spending on facilities, hardware and energy, often years before the revenue arrives to justify it. If financing costs rise, the economics of that buildout become far less forgiving.

Yet neither executive described demand as the problem. Broadcom’s chief said demand for computing infrastructure still exceeds what the industry can supply, and suggested the imbalance could persist for years. Intel’s chief likewise saw no major slowdown in the near term, comparing AI to the early internet era, when a wave of infrastructure spending eventually produced companies and services that changed everyday life. The implication is that the industry is not necessarily facing a collapse in interest, but a test of whether it can fund expansion responsibly.

There is also a competitive wrinkle. Lower-cost models from China are gaining traction, and the Intel chief argued that open-source development can push efficiency across the field. At the same time, the Broadcom chief cautioned that extreme valuations and speculative expectations can distort judgment. His message was blunt: selling the tools of the AI race will not be enough if the companies building frontier models cannot turn their spending into products people genuinely value. The next bottleneck, in other words, may not be technical. It may be whether the money behind AI can survive contact with reality.

Bénédicte Lin – Brussels, Paris, London, Beijing, Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo, New York, Taipei, Hong Kong

#AI #Semiconductors #Intel #Broadcom #DataCenters #CapitalMarkets #TechInvesting #ArtificialIntelligence #Chips #AIBuildout

Reading Time : 2 minutesIntel and Broadcom’s chief executives say the AI boom may face a constraint more serious than chip shortages: capital.
