At its annual Apsara Conference in Hangzhou, the company presented the Zhenwu V900 chip and outlined plans for Qwen models that could eventually reach between 5 trillion and 10 trillion parameters. The scale of the announcement signals that Alibaba is no longer positioning itself merely as a cloud provider adapting to the AI boom.

The proposed model would be roughly two to four times larger than Alibaba’s current flagship Qwen 3.8 Max, which reportedly contains about 2.4 trillion parameters. Alibaba says the larger systems are intended to handle more complex, longer-horizon tasks as the company explores artificial superintelligence. Yet parameter counts are only one measure of capability. The real test will be whether larger models produce more reliable reasoning, useful agents, lower operating costs, and measurable advantages for customers.

The hardware announcement may be even more consequential. Alibaba’s T-Head semiconductor unit says the Zhenwu V900 delivers three times the performance of the previous M890 processor and can be assembled into clusters of up to 500,000 chips for advanced model training and inference. The company expects mass production and commercial release in the first quarter of 2027. Those claims still require independent verification, but the strategy is clear: China’s technology giants are trying to reduce their dependence on foreign accelerators while building domestic alternatives under continuing export restrictions.

That ambition also explains Alibaba’s data center target. The company plans to increase Alibaba Cloud’s global capacity beyond 20 gigawatts by 2032, a commitment that would require enormous investments in electricity, cooling, networking, land, and chip supply. The unanswered question is whether demand will grow fast enough to justify that infrastructure, and whether Alibaba can turn raw computing scale into profitable products. China’s AI race is therefore moving beyond model demonstrations. It is becoming a contest over industrial capacity, energy, supply chains, and the ability to deliver dependable intelligence at commercial scale.

Bénédicte Lin – Brussels, Paris, London, Beijing, Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo, New York, Taipei, Hong Kong

#Alibaba #ArtificialIntelligence #ZhenwuV900 #Qwen #ChinaTech #AIChips #DataCenters #Nvidia #CloudComputing #Technology

Reading Time : 2 minutesAlibaba has announced an aggressive artificial intelligence roadmap combining a new domestic processor, trillion-parameter Qwen models, and a vast expansion of cloud infrastructure.
